This is the song that never ends...
Rita collapsed onto her bed. She was glad that she'd had the foresight to not schedule anything until tomorrow. Today they could sit around, sleep, watch television, go swimming, eat, and whatever else didn't require leaving the hotel. She could hear running water from the shower, probably Peggie, who hated being dirty. She could also hear Nicole ordering food from room service. She was trying to add Italian phrases into her order with mixed results.
Rita felt her stomach growl. She looked around the room for something to distract her. It was well-furnished with couches, several tables, a television, a minibar, two twin sized waterbeds and a cot, a jacuzzi in the bathroom in addition to the shower stall, and a beautiful view out the window. Rita had chosen this hotel partially because it was in the middle of the countryside, with few large buildings to marr the skyline. She rubbed her hand across the feather comforters, feeling the little prick of feathers against her skin. She closed her eyes, and inhaled. With her new traveling instincts, she'd already noticed the scent in Italy was different from the smells that met the young American's nose back home. It was spicier, warmer, somehow different and made her feel high. She was drowsy, and soon could only focus on one thought: I'm here.
Peggie came out of the shower in much better spirits. Rita went in next because Nicole was still wrangling with the concierge and her Italian dictionary. Rita overheard Peggie snap "Oh, just speak English, you ninny!" before she shut the bathroom door. The warm water cascaded over her, and she sluiced the grime off her body and out of her hair before shaving. She used the complimentary bottle of body wash, and soon felt like at least a few hundred dollars, if not a million. She dried her hair quickly and without much fuss, then thought of Theo, and put effort into her appearence. After she was done with her makeover, she looked into the mirror approvingly. She smiled at herself. She knew she had a winning smile. People told her all the time. She also knew her hair was well-behaved. Other than that, she was not beautiful, like Nicole. She wasn't even distinctive looking, like Peggie. She was plesant and kind looking, but nothing more. She didn't let herself contemplate that maybe being nice was better than being pretty.
She heard Theo come in, and quickly opened the door into the bedroom. She skipped out, and put her hands up in the air. "Wow, I feel a lot better. Now if the food would just arrive, we'd be really set. There was a knock on the door. She ran for it, chased by Peggie and Nicole. She laughed as she hit the door with her body, unable to stop, and looked out the eyehole. It was room service. She composed herself, and opened the door.
An older teenage guy with black hair and a cocky set to his mouth opened the door. He pushed a cart of food in the door, but instead of leaving, he just stood there. Rita thought he was waiting for a tip, but Theo gave an exclamation of recognition. So did Nicole. While Theo rushed forward to shake hands with the bellboy, Nicole fell back onto the bed with a stunned expression.
"Gaetano! I didn't know you were going to meet us here!" He patted the roomservice on the back familiarly.
"I didn't either," Gaetano said with only a small trace of an accent, "Until Dad told me you'd checked in. Why didn't you say you were staying here? Did you want it to be a surprise, or what?" His teeth were very white, and very straight.
"I didn't arrange this. It was Rita." He pointed at Rita, who felt very out of the loop, but curtsied for Theo's friend. Theo must have noticed her confused expression, and he smacked his forehead.
"Of course. I forgot to tell you. This is my cousin, Gaetano." Nicole was moaning in the background. She had just seen what was on one of the platters on the cart.
"Pancakes? I didn't order pancakes!" she sobbed. Gaetano frowned.
"Not order pancakes? What did you order then, little lady?" He looked so concerned, Rita smiled. Peggie was already stuffing her face.
"I ordered pancetta. Bacon." Her face was buried in her pillow.
The Italian laughed. "I'm so sorry, piccola donna. We aren't used to people ordering in our language. I will go get you some bacon right away. I'm sorry to bring you the wrong thing."
"Don't be silly," Peggie said. "She's just weird. I don't care what this is, it's good." She took another large bite of breakfast, and washed it down with a glass of grapefruit juice. Nicole ran into the bathroom, and locked the door. Peggie shook her head. Theo looked at the door, then at Gaetano and shrugged. "So, why are you here?"
"Don't you remember? This is the hotel my father owns! I thought you knew." Theo shook his head, then realization hit.
"Oh! That's this?" He looked around. "I had no idea it was such a classy place. Real nice, Gaetano. Spiffy."
"I take pride in my job. This is one of the nicest hotels in the city. Not quite five stars, but we're getting better everyday. But enough about my job, you haven't introduced me to these bello donne!" Gaetano beamed at Peggie and Rita, and they couldn't help but smile back. Theo introduced them, and also Nicole, whose behavior he couldn't explain, so he tried to excuse it. "She's probably tired. She'll be herself in a little bit."
"I'd love to give her the chance, yes, but I'm not off duty yet. I'll come back in a few hours, when I'm done. Dad says that you all are staying half price, by the way. You're family!" Theo tried to protest, but Geotano would hear none of it.
"What with you as family, and three beautiful girls, how could we take so much money from you? I have always wanted to get to know some American women, and this is my chance, eh?" He smiled at everyone with good humor, blew a kiss to Nicole through the bathroom door, which sent Rita into paradoxms of gigles, and left.
